Friday night’s feature is the $15,000 Gold Strike Mile for Manitoba-bred 3-year-old fillies, which goes as the third race on the card with four horses. She’s Regal is the obvious standout and I am willing to bet that she will take incredible amounts of money. She runs against three horses that are all coming out of $5,000 maiden claiming races for Manitoba-breds.
She’s Regal is a bona fide stakes horse and a legitimately nice filly. (Just a heads up, you can find her sister in the Manitoba CTHS Yearling Sale this August. Look for the catalog, which is already out. I believe she is Hip #28). I think this could be the biggest bridge jump wager the Downs has seen this year, and recently there have been some serious bridge jump attempts. Fresh Ice in the sixth race on Wednesday was a prime example.
Looking forward to Manitoba Derby Weekend
Let’s move on to other topics at hand. The Manitoba Derby is a week away (Monday, August 6) and nominations came out this week. There are some interesting shippers scheduled to make their appearance in the five stakes races on Derby weekend, but I think our local horses will hold their own, especially in the Winnipeg Sun Stakes.
The Manitoba Derby itself drew eleven nominations, 10 colts and one filly. The local hopefuls include Balooga Bull, Pleasant Closing, So Shiny and She’s Copacetic. The shippers include Cahill Chrome, a Roger Hansen trained 3-year-old that finished second in the $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate.
Also among the nominees is Up Jumps a Monster, trained by former Winnipegger Rob Chabot. He has been living up to his name and is undefeated, having dominated in all four of his starts at Northlands Park and Tampa Bay. Greg Tracy’s Clear the Runway and Bernell Rhone’s The Gov are also major contenders among the nominees.
Friday Opinions
Rob Atras should have a big day on Friday. Zee Throne is in the first race and he should run much better with a clean break. Reason to Party should give the Atras barn just that if he can complete the Daily Double by winning the second race. She’s Regal looks like a monster in the third race and I’m predicting she’ll win by 11 ½-lengths.
The fourth race is wide open but Gimmesumsugar, Arstar and Vice is Nice have all turned in impressive performances so far. The fifth race looks to be a race between Applicant and Got Milch off the layoff and with the drop in class. The sixth race, a NW2X allowance, is tough in my opinion. Vader is my horse but he will not like Mr Exspeedient in there, which makes Barramoon very playable as a rallier. The last race looks like a battle between Naughty Dotty and Northern Fancy.
Saturday Opinions
The early races Saturday look very simple with In the Other, Lots of Chrome and Cherokeeindypulpit all being favorites and major contenders. I do like Nickers ‘n Lace and Bunny Said Dance as longshots in the fourth race. Hurrionby and Hot Toccet will be tough in the fifth. The sixth race looks unbettable to me. The seventh race should go to Move Aside Kid’s at a price or Exhilarated, who should also be decent odds.
Good Luck!
