The track was muddy but the odds were great on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Downs, and someone took home $4,495 as the lone winning ticket holder on the Pick-4.
The day started off with a bang when $25 winner Sharp A held on to win by a neck under jockey Prayven Badrie for trainer Clayton Gray. We’re thinking the tip off was the best of nine gate work of 36 flat on May 24.
The second race went to favorite Restless Saint, who paid $3.80 after drawing off to win by three lengths for trainer Shelley Brown and jockey Tyrone Nelson. Then the favorites starting falling apart at the seams.
In the third race favourite Payment Approved failed to pick up his feet in the mud and the horse he beat in his last, Quaker Shaker Tony, won a duel from the outside and paid $5.70 for trainer Blair Miller and jockey Rohan Singh.
The favourite was again defeated in the fourth race when class dropper Yourhouseisclean finished last and Band of Love instead drew off under jockey Rohan Singh to win by 4 ½-lengths for trainer Satrohan Singh. Band of Love paid $8.80 to win.
Numerous players were knocked out of the Pick-4 in the fifth race when Toccer used a perfect duel-stalking trip courtesy of jockey Trevor Simpson and got the best of game second choice Usain in the stretch. Favourite Today’s Star finished fourth, the Superfecta paid $2,090.70 and the winner paid a solid $14.20 after running an improved race in his last for trainer Carl Anderson. The win also marked the first victory of the season for Anderson, who usually gets off to a better start than he has this year.
Sassie Cassie was overlooked by the bettors in the sixth race, despite a dominating win in her previous start, and a trainer, Beverly Hamilton, who had a record of 4-1-1 from six starts going into the race. Taking the lead from the outset under jockey Tim Moccasin, Sassie Cassie just would not let favourite City Splash by in the drive. And it wasn’t for lack of trying on the favourite’s part either. City Splash was turned back at the top of the stretch but was relentless coming back all the way to the wire, finally losing by a diminishing neck. Sassie Cassie paid $20.30 and knocked all but one bettor out of the 15% Pick-4.
The only live ticket on the Pick-4 going into the seventh and final race was to Unbridled Thoughts under Paul Nolan. And the top jock didn’t let the lone winning ticket holder down despite being carried wide into the stretch. Unbridled Thoughts finally got the best of the pacesetters passing the sixteenth pole and held off second choice Haggai by three-quarters of a length to win for trainer Ardell Sayler. If Haggai, or anyone else for that matter, had won the seventh race, the Pick-4 pool would have been carried over to Sunday and would have been even more enticing for Father’s Day punters.
As it was, one lucky bettor went home with $4,495 as a reward for some excellent handicapping, and the rest of us, well…
See you tomorrow. On Father’s Day!
