Paul Nolan. Won 4 of the 7 races on Friday at ASD.
Paul Nolan served notice that he won’t be wilting under recent pressure from Rohan Singh in the battle for the leading rider title by winning four of the seven races at Assiniboia Downs on Friday night and the 15% Pick-4 paid a solid $1,557.50.
Nolan won the first race on Sweet Margi ($9.30) for Runaway Bay Stable and trainer Rob Atras; the second aboard Beaudacious Lady ($7.10) for James E. Crotts and trainer Wade Rarick; the third race aboard Two Barrel Tootie ($3.80) for Janet Sayler and trainer Ardell Sayler; and the sixth race aboard Exlovinsosexylookn ($7.40) for Off 2 Win Stable and trainer Ardell Sayler.
The four wins boosted Nolan to a 32-28 lead in the rider standings over Singh, who has been giving Nolan a good run lately after an average start. Singh had no winners on Friday as the remaining three races went to Chavion Chow, Chris Husbands and Jennifer Reid.
On the trainer side, Wade Rarick and Ardell Sayler each won a pair of races and singles went to Rob Atras, Carl Anderson and Curtis Maxwell. Bondola ($11.50) gave Anderson his second win of the meet in the fourth race and Schmatz ($10.10) was up in the final strides in the seventh race to give Curtis Maxwell his first win of the meet. Sayler (14 wins) Rarick (13) both gained ground on the top two trainers in the standings, Blair Miller (18) and Chad Torevell (15).
Maxwell’s winner in the seventh race capped off a Pick-4 that included no real longshots but enough medium priced horses to make it pay. Payoffs of $11.50, $7.60, $7.40 $10.10 from races 4-7 resulted in a solid Pick-4 payoff off $1,557.50. Schmatz also topped the best Superfecta of the night.
Owned by Donna Delaurier, Schmatz paid only $10.10 to win, but when Grey Monarch (22-1), Duke of Sooke (5-1) and Mamasaysno (7-1) finished second, third and fourth respectively and favourite Gazy Gus ran out of the money, the $2 Superfecta paid $4,482.60.
A nice way to end the night for the lucky bettors that had it!
